When love turns into
violence -
Forced
out of a marriage – forced out of Denmark
We
just saw this happen – once again. The woman, crying, with bruises and scars
after a serious beating. Now she´s at the precinct, filing her husband for
abuse and domestic violence. Maybe she has already filed for divorce, and one
thing is certain: When her reasons to complain are severe violence, divorce will
be granted right away.
Her
background is the same as many other battered women, we have been counselling
over the years. Grown up in a small town in Eastern Europe, the Near Orient or
maybe in Africa, very often eith little or no knowledge about life in the modern,
Western European wellfare societies. All those women share one thing – the dream...
Most
women dream about a life with husband and children in a peaceful setting – and
of course they dream about a modern home with a few of the requisites, that are
common in a modern Danish household, the laundry machine, the quisine, – even simple things such as water running out of a tap is
part of her dream. When she sees an opportunity to make the dreams come true
through a marriage with a man from a rich society like the Danish, it is like
the fairy tale about Cinderella.
When
the marriage turns out to be more like a nightmare, it doesn´t matter whether
the woman is married to an ethnic Danish man or to a man with another origin –
as soon as the man turns violent, the dream falls apart, and the foundations of
life turn into crumbles.
It
is at this time – now – time has
come for the woman to take some important precautions, especially if there are
children involved. If You think, the woman´s situation resembles your
situation today – then you must do something about it now. Go to friends or
colleagues and ask about your legal position. If they have been staying in
Denmark for many years – or if they are Danish – they´ll know what advice
to give to You. You must know everything about your rights, your access to legal
assistance, about your permission to stay in Denmark, your rights to be with
your children, the consequences of a divorce. There are many questions, but if
you ask, you´ll get the right ansvers.
If you don´t ask, you may end up in deep trouble. Especially you must know all
about the assistance and counselling, you are entitled to, when the matter
becomes urgent. – and that is where we come in.
